Chemical Peels

Commonly Asked Questions

We understand there are many questions that you may have when considering a treatment. Below we have answered the most commonly asked questions. Please discuss any additional concerns with your skin therapist.

What are the results from a chemical exfoliation?

After a treatment you can expect to see a fresh, smooth, even and healthy tone to your skin. Our professional chemical exfoliation treatments may soften fine lines, clear imperfections and lighten hyperpigmentation.

The results of the peel treatment are also determined by the home care products and adhering to specific guidelines. Your skin therapist will provide you with all the necessary information and recommended products for your skin type and condition.

How many treatments do I need and how often?

Receiving a series of chemical exfoliation treatments will yield the best results. Your skin therapist will guide you through a program that consists of treatments and home care products suitable for your specific concerns. On average we recommend a minimum of 4-6 treatments every 7-14 days. More aggressive treatments will be spaced farther apart, which may be once per month or once per quarter.

What will my skin look like after a treatment?

Typically during a chemical treatment, the skin doesn't actually "peel" off. Rather, the chemical solution works by dissolving the upper layers of the skin.
Depending on the type of chemical exfoliation treatment, you may experience some slight tightness or even sloughing for a period of time, similar to a sunburn.

If I do not experience skin sloughing, was the treatment effective?

When a light chemical exfoliation treatment is performed, you may or may not experience skin sloughing. There are many variables that will contribute to the skin's response. If you do not peel, the treatment is still effective. The use of home care products, different prepping methods, and treatment options will affect the outcome.

What happens if I have a reaction?

We recommend a patch test on the neck or behind the ear 48 hours prior to treatment to test for any sensitivity. A 2 week pre-exfoliation regimen of appropriate glotherapeutics home care products will lesson the chance of a reaction.

Will the treatment be painful?

You may feel slight tingling sensation to a feeling of hot skin during the treatment. Having a fan blown on your face during treatment will alleviate some tingling sensation. You may feel discomfort while the chemical exfoliant is on your skin, but the tingling sensations will calm shortly after. Following the treatment your skin may feel sensitive.

Are there any special cautions following a treatment?

Most importantly, stay out of the sun and protect your skin with sunscreen. Restrain from any strenuous exercise, hot water, saunas, steam rooms and tanning beds. Your skin therapist will provide you with guidelines for the appropriate home care products to use and special cautions to take.
