The Mask of Pregnancy
If you or anyone you know has ever suffered from Melasma,
you know how devastating it can be. Melasma, also known as the Mask of
Pregnancy or Chloasma, means a darkening of the skin. While it typically
affects pregnant women, you do not have to be pregnant or a woman to develop
it.
The darkening of the skin is caused by an increase in
melanocyte activity. Melanocytes are the cells within our skin that
causes pigmentation, or color. This can be triggered by pregnancy, a
change in your hormones, oral contraceptives, thyroid dysfunctions,
photosensitizing medications, or even some cosmetics you use. If you
have a mild case, something as simple as lip waxing can exacerbate it.
What you will notice is dark patches of skin on your forehead, the center of
your cheeks, upper lip, and chin… though it can also be noted in other areas
as a result of direct sun exposure.
If this condition develops as a result of pregnancy, it
may go away on it’s own after the body has returned to its normal function.
This does take several months, however. Just as the condition
slowly progressed, it will take just as long to dissipate.
There are many treatments and products available to treat
melasma. The best treatment we have found is to apply a lightening serum
daily and to undergo a series of weekly microdermabrasion treatments, which
will increase cell turnover and hasten the process. The lightening serum
must contain a bleaching agent called hydroquinone to be most effective.
The gloLightening serum we offer contains 2% hydroquinone and azelaic acid,
both of which inhibit the synthesis of melanin (pigment) in the skin.
Other treatment options include chemical peels or IPL
fotofacials which will help to pull the pigmented cells to the surface.
However, until a hormonal balance is achieved, your body will continue to
produce hyper pigmentation, and so these options are not recommended during
pregnancy or while taking oral contraceptives.
Keep in mind that melasma is a difficult condition to
treat, but not impossible. You can begin microdermabrasion treatments as
soon as you notice your skin becoming darker, and apply the gloLightening
serum to reduce the amount of pigment being produced. Regardless of
which treatment you choose, you must avoid sun exposure. Do apply a
sunscreen daily and reapply every 2 hours if you are outdoors.
